Activities/Suggested Itineries

A car is not essential to explore Oban and the surrounding area - but it gives you more options. Lochvoil House is close to the town centre and bus, train and ferry terminal are within a ten minute walk.

Below are some suggestions for your stay.

Day 1

Most people come to Oban to spend time visiting the wonderful variety of islands that can be reached with Caledonian MacBrayne. The most popular day trip is to Mull and historic Iona - travelling from east to west on Mull you will encounter dramatic mountains and there is the possibility of seeing a rare sea-eagle before you arrive at the ferry to take you to Iona, where St Columba brought Christianity to Scotland in the 6th century. If you have time you can also visit Fingals Cave made famous by Mendelsohn's music. You can take your car or book a day trip.

Day 2

To the south of Oban lies an area full of spectacular scenery and historic gems. The first area to be explored is the Easdale and Luing area. There is a 9 hole golf course at Balvicar. As you progress south the views are of Mull all the way down to Jura. If you wish you can take a 2 hour trip on Sea-fari.

Further down the coast heading towards Lochgilphead is Arduaine, owned by the National Trust for Scotland and a garden set in twenty acres of outstanding woodland beauty.

Day 3 - A day of history

Drive South to the historic village of Kilmartin and its museum that gives a great insight into the ancient history of Scotland and Dalriada. There are many standing stone sights within a few miles. Travelling further south is the world famous Crinan Canal which stretches from Ardrishaig to Crinan. Yachts can be seen often making the safe passage through the locks from East to West. Tayvallich is a lovely village not far from here and worth a visit. You can finish your journey at Lochgilphead.
